The Life of a Writer: Fighting Insanity with a Sense of Humor
Writing is like talking to yourself all day and then realizing everyone is listening. Sometimes it’s embarrassing, other days it’s hilarious, and most days, if you can convince yourself to keep typing, it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on! I’m a romance writer… how did you not see that coming?
Ritual in Paradise: Stairs to Freedom
There is a place I love to go on the island I now call home. It is a mountain peak overlooking the ocean. But it is not the view from the top that keeps me coming back, it is the journey to get there. I live in the Hawaiian Islands, a place of sand, sun, and waves. My home is known for its gorgeous beaches; however, some people do not know about vibrant mountains which sprinkle the Hawaiian landscape. Along the southern shore of Oahu, on eastern side of Maunalua Bay, Koko Head can be seen for miles.
To The Warrior: Thank You
On this Memorial Day weekend, I have been thinking a lot about the warrior. As a writer, I do not pretend to be one. However, I have the privilege of interviewing them, listening to them, learning from them, and hearing their stories. In all of my novels there is a common element: the warrior. I did not set out to get inside the heart and mind of fictional warriors. Nevertheless, it is what I love to do because the various mentalities of warriors fascinate me.
Seducing Sentences into Stories
I have heard time and time again, from many authors, the precious outline is The Holy Grail of writing. This week I am questioning if blanket statements from writing gurus should apply to all writers.
Magic in the Mayhem
Magic in the Mayhem
For those of you who missed your letter to Hogwarts, don’t fret. I thought I was doomed to be a Muggle, too. If you have missed the wizardly reference altogether and need a dictionary, a Muggle is a mere mortal who lives in a world without knowing magic. Once upon a time, I didn’t believe in magic or at least not that it existed for me. I was too focused on completing the next task, working hard to achieve the next promotion, and wondering why I never felt fulfilled. In short, I was missing the magic!
Worlds, War, and Warriors, But More Importantly… Words.
Worlds, War, and Warriors, but more importantly… Words.
When creating a world of refugees, a lost warrior hell-bent on revenge, or a love so strong even war can’t stop it, words are the way we perceive everything. Each word, chosen with care, devotion, and even a bit of magic should always deepen the storyline of any novel. Creating a dark fantasy novel which draws the reader in, one layer at a time, past their own world, involves dancing and twining words with souls.
The Songs of Fate
The Songs of Fate: Behind the Dark Warriors…
The story began with a dream of two men—one from another world and one from my world. For many nights this gray-eyed man haunted my dreams. A man of cold eyes, but warm touch. A warrior so lost it physically hurt me to see him fight.
